What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Meal Planning Before I Started

I made every mistake in the book when I first started meal planning.

I planned too many complicated meals. I bought too much produce. I burned out by Wednesday and ordered pizza anyway. And I convinced myself meal planning just was not for me.

It was not meal planning that was the problem. It was how I was doing it.

Fed and Good takes the hardest part out of meal planning completely. It is free and it takes two minutes. But let me share what I wish someone had told me before I started.

Start With Three Dinners Not Seven

Planning a full seven days of meals sounds great in theory. In practice it is overwhelming and it sets you up to fail.

Start with three dinners for the week. Just three. Fill in the rest with eggs, leftovers, or simple things you already know how to make. Three planned dinners is sustainable. Seven is aspirational and usually ends in takeout by Thursday.

Plan for Real Life Not Ideal Life

On the days you work late you are not cooking a forty five minute meal. Be honest about that.

Plan simple fifteen minute meals for your busy nights and save the more involved cooking for weekends when you actually have time. A meal plan that fits your real life gets cooked. One that does not fit your real life ends up forgotten.

Leftovers Are Not Failure

Eating the same thing two nights in a row is not sad. It is efficient. Cook a bigger batch on Monday and eat it again Wednesday. That is not laziness, that is smart planning that saves you time and money.

Do Not Plan Around Produce You Might Not Use

Fresh produce is beautiful and expensive and it goes bad fast. Do not buy it unless you have a specific plan to use it that week.

Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious. They do not go bad. And they cost less. Use them as your default and save fresh produce for things you know with certainty you will eat.

The Bottom Line

Meal planning works when you keep it simple and honest. Three dinners. Real life schedule. Leftovers welcome. Frozen over fresh.

Let Fed and Good handle the planning for you — free, personalized to your budget, and ready in two minutes. Start there and work your way up.
